10/5 Legend of the White Snake

The White Snake, after practicing magic for hundreds of years, became immortal. She fell in love with Gui-Zhi, an arhat in heaven. Because this love was against the holy rule, Gui-Zhi was punished and sent to the earth as a man named Xu Xian, and the White Snake was locked up. She escaped, and the Buddha sent the toad, who guarded her, to catch her. The Buddha also ordered Fa-Hai, a monk, to wait at Jinshan Temple to help the toad.

Along the way, the White Snake’s deep love for Gui-Zhi moved the Green Snake, who was to stop her and propose marriage. Green Snake transformed into a young maid. Calling herself Xiao Qing, she acted as The White Snake’s bodyguard. The White Snake and Xu Xian finally met again by the West Lake and got married.

But the toad disguised himself as a Daoist priest named Wang Dao-Ling. He tricked Xu Xian into giving the White Snake realgar wine, which made her show herself in snake form. Xu Xian was shocked to death. The White Snake found a magic herb and brought him back to life.

Later, the toad (now pretending to be a young monk) helped Fa-Hai trick Xu Xian into entering the Jinshan Temple, where they locked Xu Xian up. The White Snake and Xiao Qing tried to rescue Xu Xian by organizing the water spirits in the lake and combating Fa-Hai’s troops.

Xu Xian realized how deeply the White Snake loved him, but he was trapped and couldn’t help her. Since she was pregnant and outnumbered, the White Snake had to retreat.

10/19 The Wild Crane Ford

The Wild Crane Ford was a small rural village located between two counties. After drinking heavily, landlord Chang Si-Wang passed out by the roadside. A panicked cart driver, Niu Er, thought Chang had died and ran away. Local officer Li Er-Ge found Chang’s body on the border between two counties and reported a death.

Meanwhile, villagers Wei Jiang-Xiang and her brother Dai-i-Wa found Chang alive and brought him home. The officials arrived to investigate the “death” but were shocked to find the body missing.

To cover it up, Li Er-Ge used the body of Jiang-Xiang, who had tried to take her own life after a family argument. But Jiang-Xiang wasn’t actually dead—she woke up in the middle of the night and secretly left to protect Li Er-Ge.

Ren Yan-Hu, son of a Ming Dynasty prime minister, had no child of his own. To ensure she inherited, his wife, Lady Meng, along with her brother Meng San-Kao, devised a scheme: they tricked a thief named Liu Xiao-Yi into stealing the baby son of one Bai Shi-Yong and claimed it was given birth by Lady Meng.

On the baby’s one-month celebration, Bai Shi-Yong came to deliver gifts and recognized his stolen son. When he tried to take the child back, Ren Yan-Hu ordered his men to beat him. Ren then tried to assault Bai’s wife, Fang-Shi, and kill Bai’s mother.

Realizing he had been deceived, Liu Xiao-Yi joined forces with Bai Shi-Yong. With help from hunter Wan Xiong-Fei, they captured the villainous Ren Yan-Hu and the corrupt official Meng San-Kao, bringing justice to the Bai’s at last.
